ANGLING: Anglers pulling in the carp at Mathern Mill
May 28 2008 by Anthony Woolford, South Wales Echo
THE fishing just gets better and better at recently opened Mathern Mill Fishery near Chepstow.
Jason Kelly came from Newport and pole-fished pellets for a 93lb catch of carp and tench from Waterfall Lake.
And another Newport angler, Daniel Smith, had nearly all carp in his 65lb pellet tempted bag from the same lake.
Caerphilly carp specialist Christian Duplessis just missed the magical 40lb mark when he fished the Specimen Lake at White Springs and caught a 39lb 14oz common carp.
He used pineapple flavoured pop-up boilies for bait and also landed a 21lb mirror carp.
Another Caerphilly angler, Tom Jones, was fishing alongside and he caught mirror carp weighing 32lb, 27lb and 22lb.
Steve Davies, from Porthcawl, had a fish almost too long to fit into his landing net when he fished the lake and hooked a 21lb grass carp.
Floating dog biscuits had the carp feeding off the surface at Seven Oaks Fishery and Barry Lewis, from Pencoed, used the dog food as bait to catch 14 carp to 10lb.
Ely anglers James Miller and Ashley Russell shared a catch of 24 carp to 10lb, while Birmingham visitor Bernard Staines bagged 26 carp to 17.5lb using maggots and pellets for bait.
Floating dog biscuits also worked at Warren Mill where Ely's Pete Andrews caught carp to 10lb at his first try at coarse fishing.
Paul Hayes, a 13-year-old from Ely, landed carp to 4lb and bream to 3.5lb and other Ely successes were 10 carp to 10lb by Kevin Sullivan, carp to 9.5lb landed by Geoff Willis, and carp to 10lb falling to Steve Coombes.
Peter Sherlock came from Barry for his six carp to 9lb, while the trip from Ystrad Mynach paid off for Nigel Chandler and Chris Moore when their catch included carp to 10lb and tench to 2lb.
